Origin: Allegany County was formed in 1789 from Washington County (Chapter 29, Acts of 1789). Allegany comes from the Native American word, "oolikhanna," meaning, "beautiful stream."

Origin: Created from Allegany County in 1872(Chapter 212, Acts of 1872). Last Maryland county to be formed. Named for John Work Garrett (1820-1884), railroad executive, industrialist, and financier. Garrett served as president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad from 1858 until his death in 1884.
